What Are Implant Dentures?

While traditional dentures are secured with adhesive or natural suction, implant dentures are held in place by titanium pieces surgically placed into the jawbone. This keeps them securely anchored in place at all times, making eating and speaking normally a breeze. They come in fixed or removable varieties, and we’ll perform a thorough oral exam to determine which one is the best fit for you.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

Fixed implant dentures are permanently attached to the titanium pieces supporting them, and they only need to be removed during dental appointments for cleaning and examination. For dental care at home, fixed implant dentures only require the same brushing and flossing routine as real teeth. Fixed implant dentures usually require more dental implants (four to eight) than the removable variety.

Removable Implant Dentures

Removable implant dentures can be taken out of the mouth at any time, allowing you to give your gums and palate a thorough cleaning. This variety is usually recommended with patients with lower jawbone densities because they usually only require two to five dental implants to be held in place.

The Implant Denture Process

During your implant denture consultation, we’ll thoroughly inspect your mouth to determine that you’re a good candidate for the treatment and develop a treatment plan according to your needs. You may require some dental work such as bone grafting or periodontal treatments to prepare your mouth for the procedure.

Once we have placed the dental implants in the points in your jaw that can provide the maximum hold, it will usually take about six months for them to fuse with the surrounding bone structure. We’ll then attach abutments to them, which will hold the dentures in place. Finally, we’ll design and manufacture a customized set of dentures and attach them to your dental implants.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

If you’re missing an entire arch of teeth, implant dentures can be an excellent way to enjoy a full smile if you meet the following requirements:

  • Your mouth is free of gum disease or other infections.
  • Your jawbone is dense enough to support dental implants.
  • You will practice excellent oral hygiene after your implants are placed.

In many cases, patients who do not initially meet these criteria can receive implant dentures later after improving their oral hygiene and completing any necessary preliminary treatments.
