Unlike medical insurance, dental insurance is mainly designed to prevent oral health issues from arising rather than treating them after they’ve developed. Therefore, dental plans tend to provide the most coverage for preventive services, such as routine checkups and cleanings. Services that are geared toward remedying dental health problems, such as crowns, generally won’t qualify for as much coverage.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Each dental insurance plan can vary in the specifics of how much coverage it offers for each service, but your plan is likely to follow what’s known as the 100-80-50 structure, which looks like this:

• 100% coverage for basic preventive care (X-rays, exams, etc.).
• 80% coverage for minor restorative services (fillings, gum disease therapy, etc.).
• 50% coverage for major restorative procedures (crowns, dentures, etc.).

Cosmetic services usually aren’t eligible for insurance coverage, as they’re not considered medically necessary. Some plans offer partial coverage for orthodontic treatment, but it may be restricted to patients under the age of 18.
