Cookies and candy cane on holiday tableThere are endless foods that will make your mouth water during the holidays, which can lead to a slightly larger waistline if you aren’t careful. However, some extra weight isn’t the only concern. Believe it or not, the season can be a bad time for your dental health because you probably snack more often. Not to mention, many snacks contribute to tooth decay. The holidays don’t have to ruin your dental health. Here are 4 festive appetizers you can enjoy.

1. Egg Snowmen

Hard-boiled eggs are loaded with vitamin D, which aids with calcium absorption for strong teeth and bones. You can make cute little snowmen by stacking 2 hard-boiled eggs on one another and using carrot slices for their hats and small slivers for their noses.

Carrots are a healthy treat because they are crunchy and act as tiny scrub brushes for your teeth. They also contain water and promote saliva production to keep your mouth clean.

2. Cheese Reindeer

Cheese is an excellent source of calcium for strong enamel. You can create a tasty snack by cutting triangles from a wheel of cheese. Use unsalted pretzels for the antlers and a cherry tomato for a red nose.

3. Grinch Poppers

Forget about greasy fried jalapeno poppers or mozzarella cheese sticks. Instead, shop for green grapes, bananas, and strawberries to create a holiday Grinch. Cut one end off of a grape, allowing it to stand freely. Place a banana slice on top of the grape and add an upside-down strawberry to create a Santa hat.

4. Veggie Tray

Vegetables are loaded with essential nutrients for a healthy mouth and body. Plan an appetizer tray with fresh crunchy vegetables, like celery, baby carrots, and broccoli. Add hummus to the tray for a protein-rich dip.

Invest in a Healthy Holiday Smile

Besides limiting sugars and starches, give your teeth a little extra attention during the next few weeks. Instead of brushing twice per day, brush your teeth after every meal. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque and food residue. Floss your teeth every day before heading to bed.

Although the next few weeks will be a busy time of the year, schedule your semi-annual cleaning and checkup with your dentist. They’ll ensure your teeth are clean and healthy for a beautiful holiday smile that you’ll be proud to show off.
